about the artist
Salted Snail Studio is the work of Jasper Alexander, a queer printmaker & various-media-dabbler based in Western Massachusetts.
My work primarily features beasts, tall tales, earthly critters personified, internal dialogs and the mundanity of magic.
I like to make work with stories in mind.
There are stories we tell others (there is a spectre in my attic that won’t stop playing hopscotch on the creaky floorboards), there are stories we tell ourselves (I will drink my coffee from the blue mug today because it will give me luck with this scratch off ticket), and there are stories that took up residence inside us so long ago that we couldn’t hope to find how they got there in the first place (there’s an innate power to knowing an evil’s name.)
I am fascinated by the vast variety of ways we manage to make meaning from chaos & then gift that meaning to others through story-telling. It’s alchemical. I try to treat my printmaking practice as just another narrative structure to communicate with myself and others.
I’m inspired by both the extreme & the subtle sorts of oft-repeated-stories that take purchase in our minds; I often create work illustrating fantastical cryptids & folk legends but am in equal measure interested in depicting the most banal of household objects for how they carry symbology and meaning unique to our own individual journeys.
